An original score to this short film, titled Abiogenesis. Holbeck, Still re-scored this short film as part of BIFSC 2021.

Featuring plenty of Holbeck’s trademark synth work, analog electronics underpin the whole piece. Keep an ear out for the sliding atmospheric leads that sit in the background, the heavy kicks and the warm chords that fade and bounce in and out. In a development of style, this piece also incorporates a wider array of traditional instrumental textures: sweeping strings, burbling organs and sustained scratchy tones all add to the stylized aesthetic. The result is a journey which goes from space through energetic contemporary explorations of a futuristic landscape, into a balletic scene underscored by huge explosions that transition to an emotional ending.

Some notable instruments used for this work include: Novation Peak, Soma Lyra 8, Pianobook (special thanks to this amazing community), 8DIO and Spitfire Audio. All mixing and mastering was done in-house at Holbeck’s studio.

A more traditional film score than the typical Holbeck style, this piece is an emotive journey responding to this excerpt from Son of Saul. The most notable moment comes when the old scratchy sounding piano that represents faded distant memories, transitions into a beautiful, full and dynamic sound as we move inside the mind and swelling emotion of the main character. The music in this was made almost entirely with free sample instruments, hopefully proving that you don’t need to spend a lot to make great music!
